36 Hours in Las Vegas
Beyond the Strip: immersive art, legendary food, and hidden cocktail bars.
Friday
May 29NoMad Las Vegas
NoMad Las Vegas sits inside Park MGM. The rooms are quieter than most on the strip. The library bar downstairs is one of the better spots in the city. Skip the casino floor if you can.
Mothership Coffee
Mothership has a few locations around the city. The cold brew is solid. Order one to walk with while you figure out dinner.
Lotus of Siam
Lotus of Siam is a Thai restaurant in a strip mall that has earned national attention. The northern Thai dishes are exceptional. The room is plain. The food is not. Book ahead.
NoMad Library
NoMad Library is dark and handsome. The room stays calmer than most in this city. A good end to the first night.
Saturday
May 30Qua Baths & Spa
Qua Baths at Caesars is a large spa with Roman pretensions. Hot tubs, cold plunge, quiet rooms. A couple of hours here helps after time on the strip.
Joël Robuchon
Joël Robuchon is the splurge. French fine dining in a formal room. The tasting menu is long and precise. Dress accordingly. Save it for when you want an event.
Atomic Liquors
Atomic Liquors is the oldest freestanding bar in Vegas. People used to watch nuclear tests from the roof. The crowd is mixed. A different pace than the hotel bars.
PublicUs
PublicUs is a cafe and restaurant in the arts district. The food is good and the space has life to it. A useful home base for the morning.
Omega Mart
Omega Mart is an immersive art installation disguised as a supermarket. It takes a couple hours to explore fully. Strange, funny, and worth the confusion. Buy tickets in advance.
Le Thai
Le Thai does reliable Thai food in a cheerful room downtown. The portions are generous. A good casual stop between activities.
The Neon Museum
The Neon Museum collects old casino signs and displays them in an outdoor lot. It sounds simple but walking through decades of signage has a strange pull. Book a daytime or evening tour depending on what light you want.
Sunday
May 31Siegel's Bagelmania
Siegel's Bagelmania is a no-nonsense deli. Good bagels, solid plates, strong coffee. The crowd is locals and tourists who found their way off the strip.
Vesta Coffee Roasters
Vesta Coffee Roasters does careful work in a small space. A good last cup before the airport.
The Writer's Block
The Writer's Block is an independent bookstore with a thoughtful selection. They also have a store-within-a-store that donates notebooks to kids. A nice final stop before heading out.
