Hygge vibes, harbor saunas, and New Nordic cuisine in Denmark's cozy capital.
Friday
May 29Nimb Hotel
Nimb Hotel sits inside Tivoli Gardens. The location sounds kitschy but the rooms are refined. Ask for one overlooking the park if the lights are on.
Surt
Surt focuses on vegetables without making a show of it. The space is casual and the menu changes often. Good natural wine list. Reservations recommended but not always necessary.
Jazzhus Montmartre
Jazzhus Montmartre has been hosting live jazz since the 1950s. The room is intimate and the sound is good. Check the schedule ahead of time. Some nights are better than others.
Saturday
May 30Coffee Collective
Coffee Collective has several locations and consistent quality. A reliable stop when you need one.
Bistro Lupa
Bistro Lupa does plant-based French cooking. The room is cozy and the portions are generous. Feels like a neighborhood spot that happens to serve very good food.
Hart Bageri
Hart Bageri was started by a former Noma baker. The croissants are exceptional. There is often a line. Worth it.
La Cabra
La Cabra roasts their own beans and takes the process seriously. The space is bright and minimal. A good place to sit and watch the neighborhood move.
Glyptoteket
Glyptoteket is an art museum built around a winter garden. The collection spans ancient sculpture to French impressionists. The building itself is worth the visit. Quiet on weekday mornings.
Ark
Ark is plant-based and does it well. The room is simple and the cooking is precise. Good for a lighter meal in the middle of the day.
La Banchina Sauna
La Banchina is a wine bar and harbor sauna. You can swim in the canal and warm up in the sauna. The vibe is relaxed and locals mix with visitors. Bring a swimsuit or rent one there.
Sunday
May 31Democratic Coffee
Democratic Coffee operates out of a library space. Good coffee, calm atmosphere, natural light. A nice place to start a slow morning.
Prolog Coffee
Prolog does excellent pour-overs in a small space near the meatpacking district. The baristas know what they are doing.
Statens Museum for Kunst
Statens Museum for Kunst holds the national art collection. Danish golden age paintings on one floor, contemporary work on another. The building connects old and new. Allow at least an hour.
Carmen
Carmen is a vintage boutique with a tight edit. Nearby, Ark Books stocks a good selection of design and photography titles. Both walkable from the museum.
