When to Visit

November to April offers perfect weather with temperatures from 24-30°C (75-86°F), sunny skies, and minimal rain - ideal for beaches and ruins. May to October is hot and humid (28-35°C) with hurricane season (June-November) and occasional storms. December to February is peak season with higher prices. Shoulder seasons (May, October) offer good weather with fewer crowds.

Visa

Check requirements

US, Canadian, EU, Australian, and many other nationals can enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days. You'll receive a FMM (tourist card) on arrival - keep it safe. Check inm.gob.mx.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the nearest major airport, 120km north of Tulum (1.5-2 hours drive). Cozumel Airport (CZM) is closer but has limited flights.

By Bus: ADO buses connect Tulum to Cancún (2 hours), Playa del Carmen (1 hour), and other Riviera Maya destinations.

By Car: Highway 307 runs along the coast connecting Tulum to Cancún and the rest of the Riviera Maya.

Language

Communication

Spanish is the official language. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas - Tulum caters heavily to international visitors. Service staff are generally bilingual.

Currency

Money matters

Mexican Peso (MXN). Exchange rate roughly 17-20 MXN per USD. US dollars are accepted in many tourist establishments but you'll get better rates paying in pesos. Cards accepted at hotels and nicer restaurants, but cash is essential for beach clubs, cenotes, and local establishments. ATMs available in town.

Getting Around

Local transport

Bicycles: The most popular way to get around Tulum. Rentals available everywhere ($5-10 USD per day). Beach road and town are flat and bike-friendly.

Taxis: Available but can be expensive. Negotiate fares before getting in.

Walking: Tulum town and beach areas are walkable, though it's hot. Beach road is 3km from town.

Rental Car: Useful for exploring cenotes and nearby ruins, but not necessary for staying in Tulum.

Colectivos: Shared vans connecting Tulum to Playa del Carmen and Cancún (cheap, 30-50 pesos).

From the Airport

From Cancún Airport:
ADO Bus: To Tulum bus station (2-2.5 hours, 200-250 pesos).

Private Transfer: Pre-booked shuttles ($60-100 USD, 1.5-2 hours).

Taxi: Official airport taxis ($100-150 USD, 1.5-2 hours).

Rental Car: Multiple agencies at airport, drive Highway 307 south (1.5-2 hours).
