Before You Go
March to May brings cherry blossoms and pleasant weather (10-20°C/50-68°F). Fall (September-November) offers comfortable temperatures and autumn colors. Summer is hot and humid (25-35°C) with occasional typhoons. Winter is cold but dry (0-10°C), perfect for hot springs and skiing nearby. Avoid Golden Week (late April-early May) and Obon (mid-August) when prices spike.
Visa
Check requirementsMany nationals including US, Canadian, Australian, and EU citizens can visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. Check requirements at mofa.go.jp. Japan offers eVisa for some countries.
Getting There
TransportationBy Air: Narita Airport (NRT) is 60km east of Tokyo, the main international hub. Haneda Airport (HND) is closer (20km south) and handles both domestic and international flights.
By Train: Shinkansen bullet trains connect Tokyo to Osaka (2.5 hours), Kyoto (2 hours), and other major cities.
Language
CommunicationJapanese is the official language. English proficiency is limited outside major tourist areas and international hotels. Signage in tourist areas is often bilingual. Translation apps are essential. Japanese people are generally very helpful despite language barriers.
Currency
Money mattersJapanese Yen (JPY). Japan is still surprisingly cash-based - many small restaurants, shops, and even some hotels don't accept cards. ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores and post offices accept foreign cards. Exchange rate: roughly 145-155 JPY per USD.
Getting Around
