When to Visit

September to November (spring) and March to May (autumn) offer ideal weather with temperatures from 18-25°C (64-77°F) and comfortable conditions. December to February is summer - hot (25-30°C) and perfect for beaches but also peak tourist season with higher prices. June to August is winter - mild by most standards (10-18°C) but not ideal for swimming.

Transportation

By Air: Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is Australia's busiest airport, located 8km south of the city center.

By Train: Trains connect Sydney to Melbourne (11 hours), Brisbane (14 hours), and other Australian cities, though flights are usually faster and comparable in price.

English is the official language. Sydney is very multicultural with many languages spoken, but English is universal in all settings.

Money matters

Australian Dollar (AUD). Exchange rate varies - check current rates (typically 1.4-1.6 AUD per USD). Cards accepted everywhere - Australia is nearly cashless. Tap-and-go is standard. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for excellent service (10% at restaurants).

Getting Around

Local transport

Trains: Extensive network covering city and suburbs. Get an Opal Card (tap on/off).

Ferries: Iconic way to travel, especially to Manly and other harbor destinations. Opal Card works here too.

Light Rail: Connects Central Station to inner suburbs.

Buses: Comprehensive network throughout Sydney.

Walking: CBD, Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, and Rocks are very walkable.

Uber: Widely available and affordable.

From the Airport

Arrival info

Train: Airport Link to Central Station (13 min) or Circular Quay (20 min). Around $18-20 AUD but includes hefty station access fee.

Bus: Route 400 to Bondi Junction (45 min, $5) with connections.

Uber/Taxi: $50-70 AUD to city center (20-30 min), $65-85 AUD to Bondi.

Shuttle: Door-to-door services available ($20-30 per person).
