Getting There

Transportation

By Air: São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) is South America's busiest airport, 25km northeast of the city. Congonhas Airport (CGH) handles domestic flights closer to the city center.

By Bus: Excellent bus connections to Rio de Janeiro (6 hours), other Brazilian cities, and neighboring countries from Tietê and Barra Funda bus terminals.

Language

Communication

Portuguese is the official language. English is spoken in upscale hotels, restaurants in neighborhoods like Jardins and Vila Madalena, and by younger people, but is quite limited elsewhere. Spanish is somewhat understood. Basic Portuguese is very helpful.

Currency

Money matters

Brazilian Real (BRL). Exchange rate varies significantly - check current rates (typically 4.5-5.5 BRL per USD). Cards accepted at most restaurants and shops in central neighborhoods. Cash needed for street food, markets, and some taxis. ATMs widely available - withdraw reais directly.

Getting Around

Metro: Extensive 6-line system covering key areas, clean and efficient (single ride 5 BRL). Avoid rush hours.

Uber/99: Widely used and affordable (15-35 BRL for most trips in central areas). Much safer and easier than regular taxis.

Buses: Comprehensive but complex network. Metro is easier for tourists.

Walking: Neighborhoods like Vila Madalena, Jardins, Pinheiros, and Avenida Paulista are walkable. Don't walk between neighborhoods - take Uber.
