Before You Go

When to Visit

April to June and September to October offer ideal weather with temperatures from 15-25°C (59-77°F), fewer crowds than summer, and pleasant conditions for walking. July and August are hot and crowded with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). Winter (November-March) is mild but can be rainy, with fewer tourists and lower prices.

Visa

Check requirements

EU/EEA citizens can enter freely. US, Canadian, Australian, and many other nationals can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within the Schengen Area. Check requirements at esteri.it.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is the main gateway, 30km southwest of the city. Ciampino Airport (CIA) serves budget airlines.

By Train: Roma Termini is the main hub with high-speed trains to Florence (1.5 hours), Venice (3.5 hours), Milan (3 hours), and Naples (1 hour).

Language

Communication

Italian is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and major restaurants, but less so in local neighborhoods and trattorias. Learning basic Italian phrases is appreciated and helpful.

Currency

Money matters

Euro (EUR). Cards accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops, but cash is still preferred at smaller establishments, markets, and cafes. Many places have minimum amounts for card use. ATMs widely available.
