December to March is summer with hot weather (25-35°C/77-95°F), perfect for beaches but also peak season with higher prices. February brings Carnival - the biggest party on earth but book well in advance. April to November offers cooler, drier weather (20-27°C) with fewer crowds and lower prices. June to August is winter but still warm by most standards.

Getting There
TransportationBy Air: Galeão International Airport (GIG) is the main gateway, 20km north of the city center. Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) handles domestic flights and is much closer to downtown.
By Bus: Excellent bus connections to São Paulo (6 hours) and other Brazilian cities.
Language
CommunicationPortuguese is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas, upscale hotels in Copacabana/Ipanema, and by younger people, but is limited elsewhere. Basic Portuguese is helpful.
Currency
Money mattersBrazilian Real (BRL). Exchange rate varies - check current rates (typically 4.5-5.5 BRL per USD). Cards accepted at most restaurants and shops in tourist zones. Cash needed for beach vendors, street food, and some taxis. ATMs widely available.
Getting Around
Local transportMetro: Two main lines covering key areas including Copacabana, Ipanema, and Centro. Clean and efficient but limited coverage (single ride 5 BRL).
Uber/99: Widely used and affordable (15-40 BRL for most trips). Much safer than regular taxis.
Buses: Extensive network but can be confusing and potentially unsafe for tourists.
Walking: Beach neighborhoods like Copacabana and Ipanema are very walkable during the day. Don't walk after dark or between neighborhoods - take Uber.
From the Airport
Arrival infoPremium Bus (BRT): Comfortable to Zona Sul beaches (60-90 min, 15 BRL).
Uber/99: 60-100 BRL to Copacabana/Ipanema (40-90 min depending on traffic).
Taxi: Official airport taxis with fixed rates (100-140 BRL).
From Santos Dumont: Much closer - Uber 15-30 BRL to beach areas (15-30 min).
