Before You Go

When to Visit

December to March is summer with hot weather (25-35°C/77-95°F), perfect for beaches but also peak season with higher prices. February brings Carnival - the biggest party on earth but book well in advance. April to November offers cooler, drier weather (20-27°C) with fewer crowds and lower prices. June to August is winter but still warm by most standards.

Visa

Check requirements

US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, and many other nationals can enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days. EU citizens also have visa-free access. Check gov.br/mre before travel.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: Galeão International Airport (GIG) is the main gateway, 20km north of the city center. Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) handles domestic flights and is much closer to downtown.

By Bus: Excellent bus connections to São Paulo (6 hours) and other Brazilian cities.

Language

Communication

Portuguese is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas, upscale hotels in Copacabana/Ipanema, and by younger people, but is limited elsewhere. Basic Portuguese is helpful.

Currency

Money matters

Brazilian Real (BRL). Exchange rate varies - check current rates (typically 4.5-5.5 BRL per USD). Cards accepted at most restaurants and shops in tourist zones. Cash needed for beach vendors, street food, and some taxis. ATMs widely available.

Getting Around

Local transport

Metro: Two main lines covering key areas including Copacabana, Ipanema, and Centro. Clean and efficient but limited coverage (single ride 5 BRL).

Uber/99: Widely used and affordable (15-40 BRL for most trips). Much safer than regular taxis.

Buses: Extensive network but can be confusing and potentially unsafe for tourists.

Walking: Beach neighborhoods like Copacabana and Ipanema are very walkable during the day. Don't walk after dark or between neighborhoods - take Uber.

From the Airport

Premium Bus (BRT): Comfortable to Zona Sul beaches (60-90 min, 15 BRL).

Uber/99: 60-100 BRL to Copacabana/Ipanema (40-90 min depending on traffic).

From Santos Dumont: Much closer - Uber 15-30 BRL to beach areas (15-30 min).
