When to Visit

November to April offers perfect weather with temperatures from 25-30°C (77-86°F), sunny skies, and minimal rain - ideal for surfing and beaches. May to October is hot and humid (28-35°C) with rainy season (June-October) bringing afternoon showers. December to February is peak season with higher prices. Shoulder seasons (May, October) offer good weather with fewer crowds.

Transportation

By Air: Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) has limited flights, mostly from Mexico City. Most visitors fly to Huatulco (HUX) 1.5 hours away or Oaxaca (OAX) 6 hours away.

By Bus: First-class buses from Oaxaca City (6 hours), Mexico City (12 hours), and other destinations.

Language

Communication

Spanish is the official language. English is spoken in hotels, surf shops, and tourist restaurants, but is limited in local neighborhoods. Basic Spanish is helpful.

Currency

Money matters

Mexican Peso (MXN). Exchange rate roughly 17-20 MXN per USD. Cards accepted at hotels and nicer restaurants, but cash is essential for most establishments, taxis, and markets. ATMs available but can run out of cash.

Getting Around

Local transport

Walking: The main areas (Zicatela, La Punta, Centro) are walkable, though spread out.

Taxis: Available but negotiate fares before getting in (50-100 pesos for most trips).

Colectivos: Shared vans connecting different areas (10-20 pesos).

Rental Car/Scooter: Useful for exploring nearby beaches and towns.

From Huatulco:
ADO Bus: To Puerto Escondido (1.5-2 hours, 150-200 pesos).

Taxi: 800-1,200 pesos (1.5 hours).

From Oaxaca:
ADO Bus: First-class buses (6 hours, 300-400 pesos).
