Medellín

Colombia

Before You Go

When to Visit

December to March offers the driest weather, though Medellín's "city of eternal spring" climate means year-round temperatures of 60-82°F (16-28°C). April, May, October, and November see more rain but fewer tourists and lower prices. The city hosts the famous Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival) in early August.

Visa

Check requirements

Citizens of the US, Canada, EU, Australia, and most Latin American countries can enter Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days (extendable to 180 days). Upon arrival, you'll receive an entry stamp at immigration. Keep your passport and entry stamp safe—you'll need them to exit.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) is located 18 miles southeast in Rionegro. Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) serves domestic flights closer to the city.

By Bus: Long-distance buses connect Medellín to Bogotá (10 hours), Cartagena (13 hours), and other Colombian cities.

Language

Communication

Spanish is the official language. English proficiency is limited outside tourist areas like El Poblado and Laureles. Learning basic Spanish phrases greatly enhances the experience. The Paisa accent is distinctive and considered one of Colombia's clearest Spanish dialects.

Currency

Money matters

Colombian Peso (COP). Exchange rate roughly 4,000-4,500 COP per USD. ATMs widely available. Credit cards accepted at restaurants and shops in tourist areas, but cash is essential for street vendors and local markets.

Getting Around

Local transport

Metro: Modern, efficient system with two lines plus cable cars (Metrocable). Fare: 3,050 COP (~$0.75). Clean, safe, and reliable.

Metrocable: Cable car system offering stunning city views while serving hillside neighborhoods.
