Before You Go

When to Visit

October to March offers the best weather with temperatures from 10-25°C (50-77°F), though November-January can be very cold at night and air quality is worst. March to May is extremely hot (35-45°C). June to September brings monsoon rains and high humidity. Winter is peak tourist season despite pollution concerns.

Visa

Check requirements

Most visitors need an e-Visa obtained online before travel (available for 169 nationalities) or a traditional visa from an Indian embassy. E-Visa allows 60-day stays. Apply at least 4 days before travel at indianvisaonline.gov.in.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is one of Asia's busiest hubs, located 16km southwest of central Delhi.

By Train: Delhi has multiple railway stations connecting to all major Indian cities. New Delhi Railway Station is the main hub.

Language

Communication

Hindi and English are official languages. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and by educated populations. However, signage and locals in markets and residential areas may only speak Hindi. Many also speak Punjabi and Urdu.

Currency

Money matters

Indian Rupee (INR). Exchange rate roughly 82-83 INR per USD. Cards accepted at hotels, malls, and upscale restaurants, but cash is essential for markets, street food, auto-rickshaws, and many small businesses. ATMs widely available - withdraw large amounts to minimize fees.

Getting Around

Local transport

Metro: Extensive, clean, efficient network covering most of Delhi. Very affordable (10-60 INR). Get a stored-value card or tourist card. Separate cars for women during rush hours.

Uber/Ola: Widely used and affordable (50-200 INR for most trips). Much more reliable and safer than negotiating with auto-rickshaws.

Auto-rickshaws: Three-wheeled taxis. Always negotiate price before getting in or insist on meter.

Buses: Cheap but crowded and confusing for tourists.

Walking: Possible in specific areas like Connaught Place, Hauz Khas Village, or Lodhi Gardens, but pollution can be intense.

From the Airport

Prepaid Taxi: Available at airport (500-800 INR). Use official counters only.

Airport Bus: Cheapest option to various areas (50-100 INR, 60-90 min).
