Before You Go

When to Visit

March to May (autumn) and September to November (spring) offer ideal weather with temperatures from 15-25°C (59-77°F) and pleasant conditions. December to February is summer - hot and humid (25-35°C) with many locals on vacation at the beach. June to August is winter - cool and damp (8-15°C) but great for indoor activities like tango shows and museums.

Visa

Check requirements

US, Canadian, EU, Australian, and many other nationals can enter Argentina visa-free for up to 90 days. Reciprocity fees were eliminated in 2016. Check cancilleria.gob.ar for current requirements.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) is the main gateway, 35km southwest of the city. Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AER) handles domestic and regional flights much closer to the city center.

By Bus: Excellent bus connections to Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, and other South American countries, plus all Argentine cities. Retiro is the main terminal.

Language

Communication

Spanish is the official language with a distinctive Rioplatense accent and lots of Italian influence. English is spoken in upscale hotels, restaurants in Palermo and Recoleta, and by younger people, but is limited elsewhere. Basic Spanish is helpful.

Currency

Money matters

Argentine Peso (ARS). Exchange rate fluctuates wildly - use the "blue dollar" (unofficial) rate for better value (often 2x official rate). Bring US dollars and exchange at "cuevas" (exchange houses). Cards accepted at hotels and restaurants but cash is king. Inflation is high - prices change frequently.

Getting Around

Local transport

Subte (Metro): Six lines covering key areas. Cheap (current fare varies with inflation) but crowded during rush hour. Get a SUBE card.

Buses (Colectivos): Extensive 24-hour network covering entire city. SUBE card required.

Uber/Cabify: Widely used and affordable (300-800 pesos for most trips in central areas).

Taxis: Abundant, use official yellow-and-black taxis. Negotiate or insist on meter.

Walking: Neighborhoods like Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo, and Puerto Madero are very walkable.

From the Airport

Remis (private taxi): Fixed rates around 6,000-8,000 pesos. Book at official counters.
