Bogotá

Colombia

Before You Go

When to Visit

December to March and July to August offer the driest weather, though Bogotá's high altitude (2,640m) means year-round cool temperatures (10-20°C/50-68°F). April, May, October, and November see more rain but fewer tourists. The city enjoys spring-like weather year-round due to its elevation.

Visa

Check requirements

Citizens of the US, Canada, EU, Australia, and most Latin American countries can enter Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days (extendable to 180 days). Upon arrival, you'll receive an entry stamp at immigration. Keep your passport and entry stamp safe—you'll need them to exit.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is Colombia's busiest airport, located 15km west of the city center.

By Bus: Long-distance buses connect Bogotá to Medellín (9 hours), Cartagena (20 hours), and other Colombian cities.

Language

Communication

Spanish is the official language. English proficiency is limited outside tourist areas like Zona Rosa and La Candelaria. Learning basic Spanish phrases greatly enhances the experience.

Currency

Money matters

Colombian Peso (COP). Exchange rate roughly 4,000-4,500 COP per USD. ATMs widely available. Credit cards accepted at restaurants and shops in tourist areas, but cash is essential for street vendors and local markets.

Getting Around

Local transport

TransMilenio: Bus rapid transit system covering major routes. Get a TuLlave card. Can be crowded during rush hour.

Uber/Cabify: Widely used and affordable (5,000-15,000 COP for most trips). More reliable than taxis.

Taxis: Yellow taxis available, but rideshare apps offer more transparency.

Walking: La Candelaria (historic center) and Zona Rosa are walkable, but be cautious at night.
