Before You Go

When to Visit

November to February offers the cool season with temperatures from 20-30°C (68-86°F), though 'cool' is relative. March to May is the hot season with temperatures soaring above 35°C (95°F). June to October brings monsoon rains - brief but heavy daily showers, fewer tourists, and lower prices. The city is lively year-round.

Visa

Check requirements

As of 2024, Thailand has expanded visa exemptions to 93 countries, allowing 60-day stays without a visa. Many nationalities can extend another 30 days at immigration offices. Always verify current requirements at thaiembassy.org or immigration.go.th before travel.

Getting There

Transportation

By Air: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is the main international gateway, 30km east of the city. Don Mueang Airport (DMK) handles budget airlines and some regional flights.

By Train: Hua Lamphong Station connects to northern Thailand, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian destinations.

By Bus: Multiple bus terminals connect to destinations across Thailand.

Language

Communication

Thai is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and by younger generations, but proficiency varies. In local neighborhoods and markets, English is limited. Learning basic Thai phrases is appreciated.

Currency

Money matters

Thai Baht (THB). Exchange rate roughly 32-36 THB per USD. Cash is still widely used, especially at street vendors, markets, and small restaurants. Cards accepted at malls, hotels, and chain restaurants. ATMs everywhere - withdraw large amounts to minimize fees (150-220 THB per withdrawal).

Getting Around

Local transport

BTS Skytrain: Elevated trains covering key areas, air-conditioned and efficient. Avoid rush hours (7-9am, 5-7pm). Fares: 16-59 THB.

MRT: Underground metro with fewer lines but useful routes. Similar pricing to BTS.

Chao Phraya River Boats: Orange flag boats are local transport (15-20 THB), tourist boats are overpriced.

Grab: Thai's Uber equivalent. Essential for getting around, more reliable than taxis. Motorcycle taxis also available on Grab.

Taxis: Metered taxis should use meters - insist or walk away. Starting fare 35 THB.

Tuk-tuks: Negotiate price before riding. Usually 2-3x more than Grab, but fun for short trips.

From the Airport

Arrival info

Airport Rail Link: Suvarnabhumi to city center (30 min, 45 THB).

Grab/Taxi: Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok 250-400 THB (45-90 min depending on traffic). Use official taxi queue on ground floor.

Airport Bus: Multiple routes to different areas (60-90 min, 50-150 THB).

From Don Mueang: Train to city (40 min, 10 THB) or Grab/taxi (150-300 THB).
