When to Visit

April to June and September to October offer ideal weather with temperatures from 18-26°C (64-79°F), fewer crowds than summer, and perfect conditions for exploring ancient sites. July and August are hot and crowded (25-35°C) with peak tourist season. November to March is mild but rainier, with fewer tourists and lower prices.

Transportation

By Air: Athens International Airport (ATH) is 20km east of the city center.

By Ferry: Regular ferries from Greek islands arrive at Piraeus port, 10km southwest of Athens.

By Train: Connections to other Greek cities and some European destinations.

Communication

Greek is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants - Athens is very tourist-friendly. Basic Greek phrases are appreciated.

Money matters

Euro (EUR). Cards accepted at hotels and most restaurants, but cash is preferred at smaller establishments, markets, and local tavernas. ATMs available throughout the city.

Getting Around

Local transport

Metro: Three lines covering key areas including airport. Clean and efficient (single ride €1.40, 90-min ticket €1.40).

Buses/Trams: Extensive network, same tickets work.

Taxis: Abundant and relatively cheap. Use official yellow taxis with meters.

Walking: The historic center (Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki) is very walkable.

Arrival info

Metro Line 3: Direct to Syntagma/Monastiraki (40 min, €10 one-way or €18 return).

Express Bus X95: To Syntagma Square (60 min, €6).

Taxi: Fixed rate €38 to city center (30-45 min).

Uber: Available, similar pricing to taxis.
